The metaverse and virtual reality are intertwined, but not the way you are expecting them to be

Metaverse, a name that lists itself straight out of a sci-fi movie, is now finally coming to a reality. Technology is quite steadily becoming a bonafide part of the modern world. Since 2021, the tech industry is witnessing how enterprises with the meta-mania are launching various technologies, tools, and services that will enable them to successfully launch themselves on the platform in the future. Facebook announcing advanced meta-related projects has also encouraged other companies to strategize projects and plans to utilize the full potential of the metaverse and become some of the top companies in the metaverse domain. Tech industry dominators like Mark Zuckerberg and Satya Nadella proclaim that their respective companies will be the metaverse companies, facilitating the best solutions for the platform. But even after these developments, if I ask you to close your eyes and imagine the future of the metaverse, will you be able to do it? I guess not, since the concept of the metaverse is still quite obscure. There are several tech enthusiasts who believe that the core concept of the platform revolves around virtual reality and that the development of the metaverse solely depends on virtual reality applications and gaming. This is quite the misconception that is revolving around the industry, given the fact that the domain relies on the development of several other technologies and concepts.

Regarding the role of cryptocurrencies and NFTs, it will play a significant role in the metaverse content creation industry as experts state that digital currencies will be the most natural methods of payment in the metaverse. The platform will promote enhanced operational transparency which will, in turn, require the implementation of Web 3.0. NFTs will enable tracking of real and rare virtual assets and enable seamless functioning of the platform. With all these cutting-edge technologies, it is quite evident that virtual reality is not the all-in-all of the metaverse, since its influence will exceed the real world and will eventually include the luxury sector. This misconception about the metaverse has intrigued tech experts, hence, it will be quite easy for everyone to understand why virtual reality and the metaverse are distinguished if the concepts are individually explained.


So, what is the metaverse again?

Tech academics are yet to frame a theoretical definition, but it is quite a known fact that technology is basically the iteration of the internet, in which the users can move around and interact with content and environments created by different people or companies. The various platforms will be based on distinct dimensional virtual space instead of opening a browser window or clicking on an app on the screen. Some experiences will require virtual reality headsets and other body sensors. Some of the services and images will be displayed through augmented reality glasses, and a lot of these are accessible from a regular computer or a smartphone. 

While all these speculations might kill the excitement around the emergence of this futuristic iteration of the internet, it is quite likely that the metaverse will be born when it is no longer a collection of separate virtual environments with limited access. It will be a shared digital ecosystem where users will be able to lead meaningful lives, socialize, work, access and create content on the metaverse platforms with universal products, like HTTP, FTP, or SMTP. 


Why the metaverse is not the same thing as virtual reality?

Basically, virtual reality technologies allow the same experience as the ones the metaverse is planning on taking. Hence, the concept resembles the existing VR programs. Users can conveniently interact with one another and travel to virtual locations. In addition to this, they can also build or buy virtual products and environments. So, the primary difference between the two technologies here is their limitation of current virtual worlds.  

Currently, we are using virtual reality in sectors like sports education and therapy. However, people still consider it a form of entertainment. Whereas, the meta-driven applications have the potential to scale beyond virtual reality. Furthermore, tech experts believe that it can shift the current working patterns, how people browse the internet, and use social media.

Metaverse is a new, exciting technology that has intrigued the modern tech industry. Even after existing for decades, it is now that the technology is successfully implementing its ways to become one of the greatest innovations in the tech industry and one of the advanced iterations of the internet. The technology goes beyond virtual reality, but its true form can only be understood if users start to regularly use it for their various common purposes. Well, its potential is still under question, but this will not remain the case for a very long time.
